Rifle, Cartridge & Optics for Open-Country Game

By Dispatch Advisory Team

Open-country game invites long shots, and long shots invite gear anxiety. Here's what actually matters when the range stretches past 400 yards — and what doesn't.

Cartridge: enough, not excessive

A flat-shooting, well-constructed bullet in a cartridge you can shoot well beats a magnum you flinch behind. Anything in the 6.5 to .30 class with a quality bullet covers the vast majority of mountain and plains game.

The bullet does the work

Match a tough, controlled-expansion bullet to your velocities. On close, fast impacts and long, slow ones alike, construction matters more than raw energy on paper.

Optics: clarity and a repeatable dial

A clear scope with a reliable turret or a good reticle is worth more than extra magnification. Know your dope, confirm your zero in the field, and keep it simple.

Practice what you'll do

Wind reading, field positions, and honest range estimation win more than gear ever will. Put the rounds downrange before the trip, not on the mountain.
